Buoyant Birth!

I’m so excited to announce my new affiliation with Buoyant Birth!

Buoyant Birth is an all-inclusive birth pool rental service founded in the Dallas area. They have made their expansion to Houston, and I’m proud to have signed on as one of their rental providers.

I speak from experience when I say that if you have the option, waterbirth is AMAZING. The comfort, weightlessness, and pain relief that slipping into a deep pool of warm water gave me was truly priceless. However, tracking down the right hoses, adapters, buying brand new towels just for the IMG_0007birth, paying to ship the birth pool to my home, and worrying about whether or not everything would go seamlessly on my birthing day was stressful!

All of our rentals include EVERYTHING you need to have your water birth: the birth pool, disposable liner, floating thermometer, air pump + drinking water quality hose to fill the pool, water pump + garden hose to drain the pool, a fish net, tarps, spa towels for Mom + baby, cleaning towels, a laundry bag for used linens, trash bags and multiple hose connectors. In short, we provide a simple all-inclusive solution for waterbirth! We even have extra liners available for purchase in case you want to take an herbal bath with your baby afterward (and the rest of the family, since they’ll fit!).

Want to know the BEST part? You don’t clean a single thing. Return your pool, towels, and equipment wet and dirty and we take care of everything. If you’ve ever had a home waterbirth, you know how much cleaning there is to do afterwards, and that is the last thing you want to be (or SHOULD be) doing after you’ve given birth. Enjoy your babymoon and let us do the work!

We currently have Birth Pool in a Box rentals (which are awesome!), but La Bassine pools are available upon advance request.  We are also on call 24/7 if you need help with your setup or if you need a pool delivered at the last minute.

We offer both “do it yourself” pickups and scheduled delivery and pickups to suit your needs. I’m also offering set-up and take-down services to my doula clients who wish to rent a birth pool.

Those who choose the do-it-yourself option will pick up the birth pool from one of our three current Buoyant Birth rental locations, and return it to us within 72 hours of the birth.  We’ll walk you through exactly what you need to do to set up and take down the pool.

If you schedule a delivery and pickup, we’ll bring the birth pool to your home, test the connectors in your home and walk you through exactly what to do to set up and take down the pool.  Call us when your baby is born and we’ll come to your home to pick up the pool.

eco-birth-pool-lifestyle3_1If you’re my client and are having a waterbirth, I will bring the pool to your home at our last prenatal visit. If it’s not set up by the time I join you in labor, I will set it up for you.  I
will take it home with me after you have met your baby and settled in, giving your partner more time to spend with you and your new little one instead of cleaning out your birth pool!

I’m so excited to be part of this, and bringing easy, headache-free waterbirth options to Houston!

Falling into Autumn

What a busy summer I’ve had!  At first I had regret about taking July and August off from attending births, and now I’m so glad I did autumn-leafbecause I’ve been going, going, going nonstop. I am officially back “on call” though for my September mama, and am more excited than ever to jump back into a birth after my little “vacation”.

Though I did have several prenatal and postpartum visits, the main focus of the summer was the Improving Birth Rally for Change. Planning went into full swing in early summer, and I was so excited to be part of this important movement for my second year in a row. I delved in and designed our Houston rally logo, put together a brand new website, donated full doula and placenta encapsulation services to our fundraising auction, and made some simply gorgeous signs (*wink wink). We rallied for safe, respectful, evidence-based maternity care on [a VERY hot] Labor Day on the edge of Hermann Park in Houston’s Medical Center. We had a great turnout of close to 120 rally supporters, and we got some fantastic coverage from two local news stations.

Last weekend, along with my fellow Houston Doula Cooperative member and Intact Houston director Trina Evans, I taught a Circumcision Decision workshop for some new and future parents. In attendance there was a couple who had three boys circumcised before they learned the truth and made the decision to keep their fourth son intact. The class was a wonderful success and we look forward to teaching another one in the Northeast Houston area in the coming months.

It’s now September, which means that planning is in it’s peak as we prepare for the 12th annual BIRTH Fair. This is my first year working as a volunteer on the planning committee, and I look forward to seeing you all on October 5th at Houston’s United Way Center! You can find me bouncing back and forth between the Houston Doula Cooperative booth and the Houston NOCIRC booth, meeting parents and parents-to-be and telling them all about doulas, providing information on routine infant circumcision, and enjoying the other 50+ vendors who will be in attendance!

In the meantime, I’ve got three mamas-in-waiting due this fall – a motherlooking forward to a healing birth center birth of her third child, a mom excited about her upcoming empowering VBAC, and a first time mama joyously awaiting the birth of her rainbow baby. It’s going to be a beautiful Autumn!

The Circumcision Decision

As those of you who are close to me know, the subject of circumcision is a hot button topic for me. As an active part of the Houston birth community as well as all of the networking I do online, I see so many parents who make this decision without learning the facts. Scientific, evidence-based facts.

On Saturday, August 31st, I along with the Houston Doula Cooperative and Intact Houston will be holding a brief Circumcision Decision workshop. I’m an educator at heart, and I’m excited to provide accurate information, dispel myths, and answer all of those pressing questions that parents-to-be may have regarding circumcision and proper intact care.

Whether you’re a parent-to-be, a birthworker, or just curious…you are all welcome to come out and broaden your knowledge of this sensitive topic.

Red Tent

Are you searching for a doula? Are you seeking community with other like-minded women who are pregnant or have already birthed? Come Meet the Doulas of the Houston Doula Cooperative and stay for our Red Tent.

A red tent is intended to provide a safe listening space for women of all ages to share birth stories and foster community. At the Houston Red Tent, women will share their birth stories surrounded by a community of women who support their story through deep listening. Telling birth stories can be a very powerful way to process birth as well as a way to get to know how mothers in our community are birthing.

Storytelling is an ancient ritual with tremendous power and value in society. The more we tell our stories the more we know the oral history of our lives and greater probability that we will be inspired to take action. Storytelling has the power to heal and transform our lives on a profound level.

Meet The Doulas is intended for our clients and for women (and their partners) who are actively searching for a doula.

Red Tents are for women only. Sorry daddies! Please plan on attending and bring your sister, mother, daughter, friend, cousin, grandmother, or neighbor.

I hope to see you there!

World Doula Week Giveaway!

World Doula Week Giveaway!

It’s World Doula Week! The purpose of World Doula Week (“WDW”) is to empower doulas all over the world to improve the physiological, social, emotional, and psychological health of women, newborns and families in birth and in the postpartum period. The World Doula Week events will take place all over the world during the same week, stating the benefits of the presence of doulas in birth and in the postpartum period:

* Reduces the incidence of c-sections
* May shorten the length of labor
* Reduces epidural and analgesic requests
* Increases breastfeeding initiation and continuation
* Increases mother’s satisfaction of birth experience
* Can reduce the incidence of postpartum mood disorders
* Increases new parents’ confidence in the care of their newborn

So to celebrate how super awesome doulas are, this doula is going to give away one of my favorite books that I encourage all of my mamas to read, The Thinking Women’s Guide to a Better Birth by Henci Goer.

As an intelligent woman, you are probably used to learning as much as you can before making major decisions. But when it comes to one of the most important decisions of your life–how you will give birth—it is hard to gather accurate, unbiased information. Surprisingly, much of the research does not support common medical opinion and practice.
Birth activist Henci Goer gives clear, concise information based on the latest medical studies. The Thinking Woman’s Guide to a Better Birth helps you compare and contrast your various options and shows you how to avoid unnecessary procedures, drugs, restrictions, and tests. The book covers:
  • Cesareans
  • Breech babies
  • Inducing labor
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring
  • Rupturing Membranes
  • Coping with slow labor
  • Pain medication
  • Epistiotomy
  • Vaginal birth after a Ceasarean
  • Doulas
  • Deciding on a doctor or midwife
  • Choosing where to have your baby
  • and much more . . .

If you’d like to show this doula some love and have a chance at winning this book, ENTER HERE on Rafflecopter!

Forget Everything You Think You Know About Circumcision

Forget Everything You Think You Know About Circumcision

Just for a moment.Imagine a piece of your body. A piece that serves as protector of one of your most vulnerable and sensitive private places. It maintains optimal pH balance, warmth, cleanliness, and sensitivity of that vulnerable place. It is rich with membranes that are your body’s first line of defense against bacteria and infection. It’s the most sensitized part of the most pleasurable part of your body, and made up of tens of thousands of nerve receptors that can detect the slightest touch or change in temperature. This piece allows for comfortable and intensely pleasurable intimacy, whether alone or with a partner, without the need of added lubrication. This piece of your body evolved over millions of years, and every other mammal of your sex on earth has one.

Now imagine that piece of you is missing. Continue reading
